Benefits of Knowing the Owner
I work for The Man, who also happens to be my dad. Being the boss’ son, a lot is expected of me. I am required to go above and beyond the call of duty. If my skills are able to solve a problem, I am expected to use them, even if it is not in my job description. I’m the IT department, the graphic designer, and I am expected to come up with ideas for operations, sales, and marketing. It’s a lot of work, and it adds up pretty quickly, but there are benefits to being in the family.
I live at home for free. I do get along great with my parents, but the fact that I work for my dad makes it less likely that he will want me out. It just doesn’t make sense. I am his way into the carpool lane. Although sometimes they turn into business meetings, carpool rides are pretty awesome. Once in a while I completely pass out during the drive home.
We have a soda machine in the warehouse that costs $.50 for a soda. It’s really a perk for the employees. After all the energy for powering it and the manpower to stock it, it’s really a break even. The benefit comes when it is time to collect the money from the machine. Basicall, my dad gets handed a box full of coins and a wad of singles. Since we’re used to using credit cards for just about everything, we’re not used to spending a lot of cash. So we use the cash to buy our lunches and pay for gas, much to the chagrin of cashiers everywhere. I figure for every soda I buy, I get about ten dollars back. It’s not a bad rebate program, huh?
Work can be a drag, and being in the family, there is no such thing as quitting. The boss knows when you are not working your hardest. The hours can be long. In the end, the perks of being The Man, Jr. are pretty sweet. Mock me if you will, but I work hard and reap the benefits as well.

Yeah, working for the man isn’t just a conversation topic. It’s a way of life.
